Science Fair Results
by G.B.

The Science Fair was an event hosted by Mrs. Battaglia.  Students were required to create their very own science experiment....and then solve it!  They had to come up with a problem, hypothesis, procedure, and conclusion.  Some of this year's experiments included testing which sucker candy lasted the longest, how to make hydrogen cars run longer, and which water is cleaner, pond water or puddle water.  Students who participated in the Science Fair conducted their research during flex, class time, and at home.  Mrs. Gallagher, Mrs. Miles, Mr. Tencza and Mr. Allen were also key players who helped the students prepare their experiment!  Our hats off to all those involved!

So, who decides the winners?  The judges work in the science industry and come to Woodstown from Du Pont.  They graciously volunteered their time and many thanks are extended to Chris, Mike, Brian and Katelyn!  The science fair was a huge success and listed below are the winners! These students will advance to the Salem County Science Fair held at Salem County College on February 27th, 2009.

Science Fair Winners:

SN, NW, NW, KF, SH, JB, WH, AP, KK, CS, AC, KW, TS, MK, DB, KC, CJ, EL, DD, EH, CH, DL, AC, AB, WS, AW, DB, MR, SM, TK, GB, GB, NB, AW, and SC.

Ms. Gorman and All of Her Busy Bees!

By M.B., G.B., and C.L.

Do you like to sing?  Are you not afraid of large crowds?  If that's the case, then chorus is the activity for you!  Many of our lucky students are familiar with the talented and much loved Ms. Gorman - the best chorus director around!  In the month of December, she took the Women's Chorus to The Friends Home where they sang much loved favorites, like Snow Day and Our Time in December.  She also had the Woodstown Middle School chorus perform at a fantastic concert on December 11, 2008.  She stated that the members were positively awesome!

Ms. Gorman also assists students interested in the South Jersey Elementary Chorus, which is for students in grades four through six.  Auditions will be held for chorus members in grades five and six on February 2nd and 3rd.  Be sure to sing your little heart out because only four students can be selected for this choir!

Ms. Gorman also assists the South Jersey Chorus by holding auditions and helping students rehearse.  Over 1,400 students from all over SJ compete for approximately three hundred twenty five choir positions.   Woodstown Middle School is represented this year by K.D., K.F., C.H., and N.W.  Auditions for SJ Chorus were held in November and the upcoming concert will take place Saturday, January 31st and Sunday, February 1st at Eastern High School in Voorhees - mark those calendars!!!!

You could also join Select Chorus, Men's Chorus (Men Only!), or Women's Chorus (Women Only!).  The fifth grade chorus meets every Tuesday during flex; sixth graders meet every Monday during flex; and the seventh and eighth graders meet Thursday during flex.  For additional information, see the woman in charge - Ms. Gorman!

Odyssey of the Mind

by M.C.

OOTM stands for what?  You guessed it - Odyssey of the Mind.  OOTM is an AWESOME club!  The club members are presented with a prompt - a problem of some sort - and they must 'create' a solution.  Using their imagination, creativity, and research skills, each group of students must work together as a team to 'solve' the problem. One of the prompts from this year has been to create a structure from balsa wood that can hold several hundred pounds and if you know what balsa wood is, you would be baffled!  It is comparable to chopsticks, except it is squared as opposed to round.

Each OOTM team has seven students.  If there are more than seven students who want to be a part of OOTM, tryouts are held to decide on the final seven.  This year, there are two teams in the elementary school, six teams in the middle school and one team in the high school.  The problem (prompt) they choose determines the type of activities they will be involved in for the year.  The team competes regionally in March.  Any team that wins first, second, or third place will then move on to the state finals.  The location of the finals changes each year and this year it will take place in  Ames, Iowa.  It is too late in the year to sign up for OOTM now, but there is always next year if you are interested!

PIC (People In Charge)

5th grade - Tom McHugh

6th grade - Laurie Miles

7th and 8th grade - Trish Hatton

If you like to build, laugh, write, have fun, work hard, and hang out with friends while being creative, Odyssey of the Mind might be the place for you!

Canada Day and the Mexican Fiesta by T.H., A.W., and M.C.

Each year, Mr. Fiolkowski and Mrs. Thompson host their very own Canada Day and Mexican Fiesta.  Both events are sixth grade social studies events and they each celebrate the corresponding countries - Italy and Ireland, of course!  Just Kidding - Canada and Mexico!!!  Students uphold the traditional foods and culture of the day by eating authentic dishes and participating in 'country-specific' sports.  Parents are also invited to join in on the festivities.  Both events were quite the success!

S.T.A.N.D. by M.C.

Not many students know what S.T.A.N.D. is so we are here to tell you. S.T.A.N.D. is an acronym for Students Trying another Direction. This program provides a positive environment for students to discuss any issues they may be dealing with and to complete assignments. The advisors teach students how to get organized and how to study for tests. S.T.A.N.D. meets each day during flex and after school on Wednesdays.

Book Club by A.W.

Like reading books?  Join Mrs. Donahue and Mrs. Serwan's book club!  The club meets once a week during lunch.  Book club members will read a part of the book and then discuss it over yummy snacks from home - preferably those containing chocolate!
